AGM Sunday 11th October 2015 at 10:30am

The primary objective of the AGM will be to determine the way the site is to be managed in the coming year. Although our site is owned by Calderdale, many years ago we formed our Allotment Association and opted to take on the responsibility for the management of the site ourselves. In return for managing the site on Calderdale’s behalf, all our members enjoy the benefit of reduced rents and have a certain degree of independence. Self-management, however, is a responsibility shared by every member of the site, and relies entirely on the readiness of the members to take on the task. All self-managed sites depend on having a core of enthusiastic volunteers to organise, make decisions, resolve problems, uphold the rules, manage the finances, communicate, administer, etc, etc. The AGM is the time to decide whether we have the capability to continue to be self-managed, and if so, for those volunteers to put themselves forward to serve on the next Committee. We urge all of our members to attend the AGM if they possibly can.

The Champ

Well I say if a member of our Site community has something positive to shout about … let’s celebrate it!  Growing for competition might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but for those who like to take part it can be a serious business, and the various categories are hotly contested.  Over the past few years Colin has won more awards in local agricultural shows than most of us could shake a stick at, and this year he has set his sights once again on the Southowram Show (I can almost hear the groan from the other competitors).  Well done to him, and long may his success continue.  Here are a couple of photos from some of his triumphs ….

Shiny Barbie

Those lovely folk at Millers Oils in Brighouse have very kindly donated a BBQ barrel to replace our rusty old one that fell apart.  And that means …. YIPPEE!  WE CAN HAVE A BBQ!  We just need some weather!  So pencil into your diaries Saturday 18th July (to follow on from the morning Plant Stall).  More details, numbers and menus nearer the time.  THANK YOU MILLERS OILS 🙂

Good day at the stall

It’s been a good day for our first stall of the year and the weather has stayed fine and dry, if a bit breezy.  It’s been our first opportunity to put our new gazebo to use and the whole event seemed to go very well.  Aside from raising some valuable funds for the site, we had a very enjoyable time!  It’s been particularly nice to meet members of the public who show a great deal of interest and enthusiasm for what we do.  Thank you to all those who got involved in organising, publicising, running the stall – and of course those who donated and those who bought!  Keep up the good work, and encourage others to join in.  The next stall will be held on Saturday 20th June.

First Stall of 2015

Our first plant sale of 2015 will be held on Saturday 16th May from 10am to 12Noon at the Allotment gate.  This is our Allotmenteers’ first opportunity to re-home some of their surplus stock of young plants, to raise some site funds and to have a bit of a social event. It’s also a chance for the public to come and meet us, share our enthusiasm for growing, and to pick up a bargain at the same time.  Spread the word – everyone is welcome, so come and join us!

We plan to have a similar event each month over the next few months – so watch this space!
